Few days ago, I was studying my Bible and I discovered something I hadn’t seen in years. It was about David and I can’t but think about it all over again. Even though we had wrote a project on the life of David while I was in Bible School, I didn’t discover these three things then. I guess its a message for the moment.
Each time I think about the sweet Psalmist of Israel, I had one summary to attribute to his success which is his heart. I have always seen his success in how he made it as a spiritual figure gaining an everlasting covenant traced to his heart. While this maybe true and justifiable with some verses of the scripture especially when you compare him with his predecessor.
It dawn on me that I have been taking one sided approach. I had been looking at what David brought to the equation of his life. I have failed to look at what God offered him to make the equation worked. So I discovered three things God gave David. If you have these three things you are made. And if well managed, you could earn spiritual and societal stature like David.
The man after God’s heart as scripture called him has his own flaws. He was a polygamist, murderer, thief etc. Yet he made it because he offered a good heart to God. God gave him three things in return. Friends, we can’t go far with God without a good heart. The Bible says the Lord’s eye is in search a man with a right heart. There is no limit to what God can do with a man with a right heart.
In return to his right heart, God was with David everywhere he went. This is by far the greatest of all that David received from God. Even in his darkest hour, God wasn’t silent as long as David commune with Him. This was one thing the sons of prophet understood that made them insist that Elisha should follow them. Bible students know the rest of the narrative.
The second thing David received from God was that all his enemies were cut off from him. If you know the story of David very well, you will know this true. He fought and won many wars. He didn’t win those wars because of his strength but because God cut off his enemies. Starting with his predecessor, Saul God cut off all of them. You will always read where God tells him to pursue because He is giving him victory.
The third thing David received was that God made him a name. Whether or not you are Bible scholar, you can’t argue with this fact. If you understand the Davidic covenant and how the name of David is regarded in Israel, you will know this is true. The name David had in Israel is not just associated with his conquest, its because God made him a name.
Its not just good enough to read this piece. As I said earlier, its a message for the moment. You can check 2 Samuel 7:9. Its time to pray for yourself. The Bible says, Jacob was left alone and he prayed. Don’t you think you need these three things in this second part of the year, 2019? Arise and pray. Ask for these three things with the whole of your heart. As you do so, God will reach out to you beyond your imagination as he did in the life of David.
God bless you.
