Matt 16: 13-16
Today, almost everyone can say something about Jesus. Whether it is correct or wrong is another thing that has to be determined by the Bible. Both the saved and unsaved have something to say about who Jesus is. Well, this should not be a difficult thing to say especially if you are a christian. In this piece, the subject is more than the head knowledge of who Jesus is.
In our Biblical reference, Jesus at a point in His ministry stood before his disciples and asked them about what people call him. They were all eager to say something since they were reporting people’s opinion and knowledge about Jesus. Notice the word “they” in verse 14 as they response came forth. How easy it is for us all to talk about Jesus in the light of other people’s opinion and knowledge about Jesus. It could be our Pastor, Parent, colleague or friends. Do you know Jesus beyond what you hear from people?
In verse 15, we see the master reached the climax of the discussion by asking who each of them call Jesus. This time around, there was silence and enthusiasm to talk dropped. Only one out of twelve disciples was able to say something. If you are asked the same question, will you not be found wanting? Think about it. They all have the same master and relate with him on first hand basis. They talk, walk and dine together, yet eleven people had no words to say. They were moving together but were not all on the same level.
One thing to think about is that if this could happen among the disciples who walked with the master, how much more in today’s Christianity? How did it happen that eleven people lost the person they were walking with in transit? Have you not lost him too? Only one man could reveal the real person of Jesus. This means that he somehow discovered Jesus for himself. If eleven people could walk with Jesus and still not discover Him, it’s a pointer that several may never be able to discover Jesus while claiming to be following Him today. This reveal that there are several in the church that do not know Jesus.
Knowing Jesus is a personal work. It cannot happen by accident. It has to be deliberate. The disciples listened to the same teaching from the master Himself. They saw the same manifestation of the power of God in Jesus ministry together yet only one knew who Jesus was. This means that beyond what they all saw and listen to in Jesus teachings, Peter went deeper to know Jesus. That’s a conscious effort. Are you making any effort to know Jesus personally?
To know Jesus personally means that you have a personal relationship with Him. If you don’t know him yet, it means, you don’t have an intimate relationship with Him. And if you claim to have relationship with Him but you don’t know him for yourself yet, it means your relationship is not cordial. You need to discover Jesus personally. Except you come to this point your Christianity, you have not started your walk with God.
It is time to discover Jesus for yourself, remember those guys in the book of Acts who were casting out demons in the name Jesus whom Paul preached, they battered and disgraced because they didn’t know Him whom they want to use His power. Are you like them too, you want to see Jesus intervene in your situation but you are not ready to know Him. It is time to find God, begin to seek Him diligently and He will show up. God bless you.
